India: Hazardous air quality levels reported in Delhi December 9 /update 1

As of Monday, December 9, hazardous air quality levels continue to be recorded in Delhi-NCR where an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 256 has been recorded in Alipur at around 13:00 (local time).

Unhealthy air quality levels have also been recorded in the neighboring cities of Gurugram (179), Faridabad (214), Noida (192) and Ghaziabad (181).

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) the situation is forecast to improve on Thursday, December 11, as rainfall is expected in northwest India.

Context

Health officials declared a public health emergency on November 1 due to the "Severe+" level of air pollution in New Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), and transport authorities implemented and odd-even road rationing scheme across the city, effective through November 15. A ban has also been issued on hot-mix plants and stone crusher plants in Delhi-NCR as part of governmental anti-pollution measures.

An AQI reading of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 moderate, and 101-200+ unhealthy.

Advice

Individuals in the National Capital Region, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad are advised to monitor the situation, limit outdoor activities until the situation normalizes, and wear N95 rated masks for protection. Children and those with chronic respiratory illnesses should exercise increased caution. Individuals are advised to seek medical attention if experiencing breathing difficulties or other health concerns.
