China: Telecoms facial recognition security program implemented as of December 1 /update 2

Authorities introduce facial recognition security program on telecoms as of December 1

On Sunday, December 1, Chinese authorities have launched a new facial recognition program for users subscribing to telecommunications services within the territory. Under the new regulation, facial recognition is mandatory for all new mobile phone numbers registered since Sunday. It remains unclear how the program will affect numbers registered prior to December 1.

The program aims to reduce telecom fraud, although experts have raised concerns that the facial recognition system could be used without proper legal safeguards for the user.

Potentially impacted travelers are advised to remain aware of all local regulations.
