Pakistan: Nationwide women’s march planned March 8

Activist groups organize women’s marches across Pakistan March 8; heightened security presence and associated disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Tens of thousands of women are expected to participate in the Aurat March in urban centers across Pakistan on Sunday, March 8, to mark International Women's Day. On Tuesday, March 3, a Pakistani court granted official permission to the event's organizers, after a complainant petitioned the court earlier in February to place restrictions on the march. Several threats have been issued against the event's organizers and participants.

A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions, including road closures and traffic congestion, are to be expected in the vicinity of all demonstrations.

Advice

Individuals in Pakistan are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all large public gatherings and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate a heightened security presence and associated transportation and commercial disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
