DRC: Clashes reported in Djugu territory (Ituri province) April 8

At least ten CODECO militants killed amid clashes with government troops in Djugu territory (Ituri province) on April 8; further unrest possible over the near term

On Wednesday, April 8, at least ten members of the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) were killed and three others were captured amid clashes with security personnel in Djugu territory (Ituri province). Government forces are reportedly conducting an offensive in the Walendu Pisti area of the territory to drive CODECO forces from the region. At least four soldiers were wounded in a separate incident in the Tshru area of Walendu Pisti. According to local reports, sporadic gunfire was ongoing as of Thursday, April 9, in the vicinity of Goby and Jiba.

The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the area.

Individuals in Ituri province are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
