Authorities announced on Tuesday, December 3, that they had foiled a series of planned bomb attacks in Maguindanao, Cotobado, and Sultan Kudarat provinces (Mindanao island). At least 14 Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and firearms have been seized in several Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) camps in Shariff Saydona Mustapha town (Maguindanao).

A military operation against terrorist groups is ongoing in Maguindanao. Heightened security presence is expected in the area. Clashes between Philippine soldiers and BIFF militants cannot be ruled out.

Context

The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) is an Islamist militant organization and Moro secessionist group active on Mindanao. The group has been active since 2008, when it split from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
