Civil society groups to hold demonstration in Niamey December 29; heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Civil society groups have called for a demonstration to be held in Niamey on Sunday, December 29, to denounce the foreign military presence in the country. The demonstration was originally set to take place on December 15, but was postponed in observance of a decree banning demonstrations during periods of national mourning after an attack on a military camp in Inatès left 70 Nigerien soldiers dead on December 10.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected near the protest site.

Advice

Individuals in Niamey are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
