India: Farmers trade union protest blocks traffic in New Delhi December 1

Farmers trade union protest blocks traffic in New Delhi on December 1; disruption likely

Warning

Event

A farmers trade union demonstration in New Delhi on Tuesday, December 1, has caused traffic congestion in areas north and west of the city. Police have closed the Singhu and Tikri borders with Haryana to traffic and are checking other places in light of the ongoing protest. The closure of the borders has also resulted in heavy traffic on alternative routes, including the Badusarai and Jhatikara borders between New Delhi and Haryana. Additionally, a general strike has been organized by trade unions in support of the farmers and is being held to denounce perceived anti-labor policies of the central government.

Demonstrations are expected to be very well attended. A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of any demonstration

Advice

Those in New Delhi are advised to avoid the vicinity of the demonstration as a precaution, monitor developments, anticipate transportation and business disruptions near protest sites, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
