Somalia: US airstrikes targets Al-Shabaab militants in Mubaraak April 5

US airstrikes kill at least eight suspected Al-Shabaab militants near Mubaraak (Lower Shabelle region) on April 5; further military operations targeting Al-Shabaab possible in the region over the near term

US Africa Command, in conjunction with the Federal Government of Somalia, conducted three airstrikes on Sunday, April 5, targeting members of Al-Shabaab in the vicinity of Mubaraak (Lower Shabelle region). According to initial assessments, at least eight militants were killed in the strikes.

Further military operations against Al-Shabaab fighters, as well as attacks by Al-Shabaab, are possible throughout Somalia in the near term.

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Individuals in Somalia are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
