Event

Heavy rains on Saturday, February 8, caused severe flooding in Binga (Matebeleland North province), which has continued through Tuesday, February 11. Houses, food, and livestock have been destroyed in the flooding; nearby villages were reportedly affected as well. Evacuation operations are planned on Tuesday for those villagers who have been stranded by the high floodwaters.

Further flooding and associated landslides, transportation and business disruptions, and disruptions to power and communication services are expected to continue in the area over the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight status before setting out, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
