Event

Activists plan to march from Parque Independencia to the National Palace in Santo Domingo from 09:00 (local time) on December 4. The action is the latest to demand the government approve a bill that would grant 30 percent of pension funds to workers.

Authorities will almost certainly tighten security around the National Palace during the protest. During a previous related rally at the National Congress, demonstrators threw rocks and damaged the property and some vehicles; police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. Similar incidents of violence and clashes are possible on December 4. Localized traffic disruptions are highly likely.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Allow extra time to reach destinations near the march route in Santo Domingo on December 4.
