Peru: Second round of elections on November 8

Event

Local and regional elections were held in Peru on Sunday, October 7. On that day, voters headed to the polls to elect 25 regional governors, 196 provincial mayors, and 1874 district mayors. In 14 regions, no candidate obtained a 30 percent of votes, the minimum required to be elected. The 14 regions where the run-off will happen are: Lima, Piura, Arequipa, Cajamarca, Cusco, Ancash, Huánuco, Ayacucho, Apurímac, Amazonas, Tacna, Pasco, Tumbes, Madre de Dios.  Therefore, a second round of elections will be held on Thursday, November 8. Political rallies are possible in the days leading up to the vote. An increased security presence is likely at any election-related event.

Context

The governor and regional vice-governor in Peru are jointly elected for a four-year term. To be elected, they are required to obtain at least 30% of valid votes. If no candidate wins more than 30% of the votes, the top two candidates will compete in a second round of elections, 30 calendar days from when the official counts of the first round were announced.
