Demonstrations are expected in Baghdad and Najaf for Suleimani’s mourning period culmination on February 11-14; avoid all protests

Demonstrations and processions are expected in Baghdad and Najaf from Tuesday, February 11, through Friday, February 14, as the 40-day mourning period for former Iranian Al Quds commander Qassem Suleimani comes to an end. In Baghdad, the following events are scheduled:

  • February 11: Memorial ceremony at the Mansour Theatre inside the International Zone (IZ).
  • February 11: Public gathering at the Martyr Haydar al-Mayahi Hall IVO Shaheed Monument in central Baghdad.
  • February 12: Two condolence processions (male and female) near the Zawiyah mosque in the Karrada district.
  • February 13: A parade and procession at the site of the airstrike near Baghdad International Airport (BGW).

Related events and demonstrations are expected in Najaf on February 14.

The Green/International Zone in Central Baghdad will be accessible to local citizens from 06:00 - 11:00 (local time) and again from 14:00 - 19:00 on these dates.

Tensions have increased in Iraq after US forces killed Qasem Soleimani, the commander of Iran's Quds Force, near Baghdad International Airport (BGW) in an airstrike on January 3. Notably, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), was also killed in the strike.

Individuals in Baghdad, Najaf, and across Iraq are advised to closely monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
