Labour union CUT to hold National Congress in Santiago January 24; heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions expected

The CUT (Workers' United Center) has convened the 12th National Congress will take place in Santiago on Friday, January 24, amid an ongoing anti-government nationwide movement. The event is set to begin at 11:00 (local time) at the CUT headquarters where union members will address several societal issues.

Related anti-government protests remain possible in Santiago on Friday. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are be expected near the CUT headquarters.

Demonstrations broke out in October 2019 after the Chilean government announced an increase in metro and bus fares. The mass protests escalated in Santiago and other cities over the following days to denounce high costs of living, rising electricity prices, the privatization of water, and other social issues.

Individuals in Chile, particularly in Santiago, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, prepare for localized disruptions to transportation, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
