Strong wind warning in effect for Solomon Islands due to tropical disturbance February 20; associated disruptions expected

A strong wind warning is in effect for the Solomon Islands as of 02:40 (local time) on Thursday, February 20, with possible winds of up to 46 kph (29 mph). Tropical Disturbance 08F hit the islands on Tuesday, February 18, bringing winds of up to 111 kph (69 mph), heavy rain, and dangerous waves. A heavy rain warning was canceled on Wednesday, February 19, as weather began to improve.

The Fiji Meteorological service has reported the risk of the tropical disturbance becoming a cyclone over the next 24 to 48 hours is moderate as the weather system moves southeast.

Individuals in the Solomon Islands are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering transportation and business disruptions, confirm flight reservations, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
