More than 2000 climate activists participated in demonstrations at open-pit coal mines near Cottbus and Leipzig on Saturday, November 30. Three police officers were reportedly lightly wounded after scuffles broke out between security forces and demonstrators at the Cottbus site. Activists gathered to denounce the use of coal to produce electricity.
Additional protests are possible throughout Germany over the near term. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions to transportation are likely around any protests.
Individuals in Germany are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities
