Myanmar: Protests reported in Yangon December 23

Hundreds gather to protest in Yangon over rape case involving minor December 23; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected.

Over 400 people reportedly held a march in central Yangon in the afternoon (local time) of Monday, December 23, to protest police misconducts and to ask legal action to be taken following the reveal of a three-year-old rape victim's identity.

A heightened security presence and residual transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the protest over the coming hours.

Further related protests cannot be ruled out.

Individuals in Yangon are advised to monitor developments to the situation, follow all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. particularly curfews), and avoid protests or large gatherings due to the risk of associated violence.
