Warning

Event

Heavy rains and subsequent flooding have affected several areas across New Caledonia on Sunday, April 19, and Monday, April 20. The French Civil Protection (COGIC) reported two people missing in the Païta commune (Grande Terre island). Further, flooding prompted power outages and damage to roads in several areas. Weather officials forecast additional heavy rains, strong winds, and thunderstorms across New Caledonia on Tuesday, April 21.

Associated flooding, landslides, and transportation disruptions are to be anticipated over the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in New Caledonia are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
