Vanuatu: Weather warnings issued ahead of tropical cyclone April 2

Authorities issue weather alert for tropical cyclone over Vanuatu April 2; dangerous winds, flooding, landslides, and heavy rain expected

On Thursday, April 2, the Vanuatu Meteorological and Geo-Hazards Department issued a Severe Weather Warning as a tropical low in the region is forecast to turn into a tropical cyclone near the island nation from Friday, April 3. The cyclone is expected to remain in the area until at least Wednesday, April 8.  

Authorities have advised people to take precautions against potential flash flooding and landslides in low lying areas and areas close to river banks, as isolated heavy rainfall is expected.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, avoid sea travel, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
