Ethiopia: Federal police deployed to public universities December 10

Federal police deployed to all public universities nationwide on December 10 to curb ethnic violence; heightened security presence expected over the near term

Officials announced that federal police have been deployed to all 45 public universities in the country on Tuesday, December 10, in an effort to ease ethnic tensions. Seven students have reportedly been killed over the last three months as a result of ethnic violence. As of Tuesday, five campus security guards have been arrested for their involvement in clashes with students. Officials did not specify how long federal police would remain present on the campuses.

A heightened security presence is to be expected on the premises of all public universities over the near term. Further clashes between police and students are possible in the coming days.

Individuals present in Ethiopia are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any large gatherings and demonstrations due to the risk of violence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities or their home government.
