Kenya: At least eight killed in attack on bus in Mandera county December 6

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants attack bus in Mandera county December 6, killing at least eight; similar attacks possible over the near term

At least eight people were killed on Friday, December 6, in an attack on a bus near Kenya's border with Somalia. The vehicle was traveling between Wajir and Mandera counties when it was ambushed by gunmen at about 17:30 (local time). According to police officials, the assailants are suspected Al-Shabaab members.

Further such attacks are possible in the near term.

Due to various security concerns, many Western governments advise against travel to a number of regions in the country, including areas bordering Somalia (parts of Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, and Lamu counties), Ethiopia, and South Sudan. Nonessential travel to the city of Mombasa and several Nairobi neighborhoods (including Eastleigh and Pangani) is also advised against.
