Zambia: Protests possible due to electricity tariff hike December 27

Protests against increased prices of oil and electricity likely in the coming days

The Zambian Energy Board has announced an electricity tariff increase of 200 percent for all residential customers on Friday, December 27, while the price of petrol is also set to increase by ten percent. The fuel and electricity hikes have sparked an uproar among Zambians, raising the possibility for protests in the upcoming days.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected near any demonstration sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Individuals in Zambia are advised to monitor developments of the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
