Somalia: US airstrike targets Al-Shabaab militants in Bush Madina April 3

At least five Al-Shabaab militants killed in US airstrike near Bush Madina (Bay region) on April 3; further military operations targeting Al-Shabaab possible in the region over the near term

US Africa Command, in conjunction with the Federal Government of Somalia, conducted an airstrike on Friday, April 3, targeting members of Al-Shabaab in the vicinity of Bush Madina (Bay region). According to initial assessments, at least five militants were killed in the strike.

Further military operations against Al-Shabaab fighters, as well as attacks by Al-Shabaab, are possible throughout Somalia in the near term.

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Individuals in Somalia are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
