Protest expected in Bratislava November 17

Anti-government protest expected in Bratislava on November 17; avoid the area

Warning

Event

A large anti-government protest is expected in Bratislava on Tuesday, November 17, with participants to protest coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions and local government policies. Slovak authorities have not granted permission for the demonstration to go ahead. Right-wing groups, including neo-Nazi groups, are expected to take part, with fears that the protest may be similar to one on October 17 which led to clashes with security forces. The protest is expected to start at 12:00 (local time), with gathering points including the Old Town, the Presidential Palace/Freedom Square, the main train station, SNP Square, and the Prime Minister's Office. Slovak police advise individuals to avoid the area given the risk of violence.

Disruption to transportation and business is likely over the course of the day, particularly in central Bratislava. A heightened security presence is to be expected.

Advice

Those in Bratislava are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate a heightened security presence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
