Landslides leave at least 17 people dead in Budinbugyo district December 9; further rainfall forecast over the coming days may cause additional landslides

As of Monday, December 9, heavy rain and associated landslides, which have hit Budinbugyo district in western Uganda since Monday, December 2, have left at least 17 people dead. According to local authorities, the death toll is likely to rise, as search and rescue efforts continue in the area.

Further rainfall is forecast in the district over the coming days and weeks, which may cause additional landslides. Consequent transportation disruptions are to be expected in affected areas over the coming days.

Individuals in Budinbugyo district are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid landslide-affected areas, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders).
