Belgium: General strike planned January 28

Union calls for nationwide protest on January 28; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected

The General Federation of Belgian Labor (FGTB) has called for a general strike on Tuesday, January 28, to demand new social rights including better pay and health coverage, among other issues. Participants plan to gather at 10:00 (local time) near Gare du Nord between Avenue Simon Bolivar and Boulevard Roi Albert II. Additional protests are to be anticipated in urban centers across the country. Organizers have asked participants to bring red umbrellas as a symbol of protest.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are to be expected near all demonstration sites.

Individuals in Belgium, particularly in Brussels, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, prepare for transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities..
