Al-Shabaab militants kill three teachers and abduct one in Kamuthe (Garissa County) January 13; similar attacks possible in the near term

According to police report, suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked a police post in Kamuthe (Garissa County) and attempted to destroy a nearby communication mast at around 02:00 (local time) on Monday, January 13. Three teachers were reportedly killed and another was abducted in the process.

Similar attacks are possible in Garissa county over the near term.

Individuals in Garissa County are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the area of the incident, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

Due to various security concerns, many Western governments have advised against travel to a number of regions in the country, including areas bordering Somalia (parts of Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, and Lamu counties), Ethiopia, and South Sudan. Nonessential travel to the city of Mombasa and several Nairobi neighborhoods (including Eastleigh and Pangani) is also advised against.
