Algeria: Possible ban on private aircraft from Algerian airspace as of March 31

Government reportedly issues order banning the use of private aircraft in Algerian airspace March 31

Informational

Event

Local reports indicate the Algerian government banned private aircraft from operating within its airspace as of Sunday, March 31. Aviation officials reportedly sent a directive to all airports on Sunday morning (local time) although the reasoning for the move is unclear. Unconfirmed reports indicate the order applies to all private aircraft, regardless of country of registration.

Context

The move comes as the government has increased its efforts to prevent prominent political and business figures from leaving the country amid the ongoing crisis.

Multiple protests have been organized across the country since February 22 in response to President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's campaign to be reelected for a fifth term; presidential elections were set for April 18 before being postponed by the president. Bouteflika previously stated he would not run for reelection following weeks of protests over his candidacy.
