Bangladesh: Mobile phone services restricted in border areas December 29

Authorities suspend mobile services operated by Bangladeshi carriers in border areas as of December 29; associated telecommunications disruptions expected

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has asked the Grameenphone, Robi, Banlalink, and Teletalk phone carriers to block operations up to one kilometer (0.6 mile) from its borders on Sunday, December 29. Around 2000 mobile towers are expected to be turned off in the coming hours and days, impacting over 10,000 people in the 32 districts sharing borders with India and Myanmar.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate telecommunications disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
