Heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides leave at least six people dead in Riau as of December 20; additional flooding and landslides to be expected over the near term

At least six people were killed in flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain in Riau as of Friday, December 20. According to the Riau Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), flooding has affected over 62,630 people across the Rokan Hulu, Kampar, Pelalawan, Kuantan Singingi, Indragiri Hulu, and Rokan Hilir districts. Authorities have issued an emergency alert for floods and landslides in the Kampar, Rokan Hulu, Pelalawan, and Indragiri Hulu districts, in effect until Tuesday, December 31.

Additional flooding, landslides, and associated business and transportation disruptions are to be expected in Riau over the near term.

Individuals in Riau are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding and landslides, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
