Bangladesh: Students protests in Dhaka January 6-7

Students protest over rape case in Dhaka January 6-7; further protests possible over the near term

An alliance of 12 student organizations from Dhaka University reportedly blocked the Shahbagh intersection and the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the Kurmitola area of the capital between 12:20 and 13:30 (local time) on Monday, January 6, to protest the alleged rape of a student on Sunday, January 5.

Student unions have scheduled another rally at Dhaka University's campus at around 11:00 on Tuesday, January 7.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all protest sites. Further related protests are possible over the near term.

Individuals in Dhaka are advised to monitor developments to the situation, follow all instructions issued by the local authorities, and avoid protests or large gatherings due to the risk of associated violence.
