The FECODE teachers’ union is planning a 48-hour nationwide strike from Thursday, February 20, through Friday, February 21. FECODE’s directors voted to hold the work stoppage to demand that the government take greater action to prevent violence targeting educators and provide better health services. During the strike, teachers are organizing peaceful demonstrations and other events in cities across the country, particularly in department capitals.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around all associated protests.
According to FECODE, 14 teachers were killed and another 870 were threatened in 2019.
Individuals in Colombia, particularly in Bogotá, are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, and obey instructions issued by local authorities.
