Colombia: Car bomb detonates in Cauca department November 22

Car bomb detonates outside of a police station in Santander de Quilichao (Cauca department) on November 22, killing at least three people; investigation ongoing



A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated outside of the police station in Santander de Quilichao (Cauca department) on the evening (local time) of Friday, November 22. The bomb exploded around 20:45, killing at least three people and wounding another ten. Local officials implemented a curfew at 23:30 and military and police personnel deployed to the area. According to the authorities, the attack is believed to have been carried out by criminals and is not related to the ongoing protests throughout the country.

A heightened security presence and localized disruptions are expected around the blast site. Details are still emerging.


Several unions and civil society groups organized the nationwide strike and rallies on November 21 to protest the policies of President Ivan Duque’s administration.


Individuals in Santander de Quilichao, and Cauca department more generally, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the area of the blast, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
