Slovakia: Nationwide protests on February 21 ahead of February 29 election

Protesters demonstrate nationwide on February 21 ahead of February 29 parliamentary election; further protests possible over the near term

Thousands of protesters gathered across Slovakia on Friday, February 21, to commemorate the second anniversary of the murder of Jan Kuciak, an investigative journalist whose death triggered a political crisis in the country.

These demonstrations come days before Slovakia's parliamentary election, which will be held on Saturday, February 29.

Further protests are possible in the days leading up to the election. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any demonstration.

Individuals in Slovakia are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all public gatherings and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
