Indonesian authorities will deploy additional 160,000 security personnel throughout the country due to the risk of attacks during the holiday period and into January 2020. According to officials from the National Police Traffic Corps, military personnel will guard churches and tourist sites. This comes days after Indonesian National Police arrested six alleged militants believed to be members of an Islamic State (IS)-affiliated cell.
Heightened security measures should be expected over the coming several weeks.
Individuals traveling in Indonesia are advised to remain vigilant at all times, report suspicious objects and behavior to the police, follow instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments, and avoid all gatherings as a precaution.
