Mexico: Anti-government protests scheduled in several cities February 20-22

Anti-government protests expected across the country, including in Mexico City, on February 20-22; significant transportation disruptions expected

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) has called for anti-government protests in several cities across Mexico from Thursday, February 20, through Saturday, February 22, against infrastructure projects proposed by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO). Participants will gather for protests as follows:

  • Thursday, February 20: protests in various locations across the city, likely in the areas affected by the proposals. This includes the Quintana Roo, Campeche, Yucatán, Tabasco, and Chiapas states
  • Friday, February 21: protest scheduled in Mexico City, from the Federal Electricity Commission
  • Saturday, February 22: protest in Amilcingo, in Morelos state

Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are expected in the vicinity of all protests. Roadblocks are possible.

Individuals in Mexico City and across the country are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, allow ample travel time, and obey instructions issued by local authorities.
