Turkey: Demonstrations scheduled in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir January 19

Several demonstrations will take place across Turkey on Sunday, January 19, to commemorate the assassination of Hrant Dink, murdered in 2007 by a Turkish nationalist. In Istanbul, participants plan to gather at 15:00 (local time) in front of the Agos newspaper building. Further protests are expected in Ankara at 15:00 on Adakale street, and in Izmir at 15:00 at the Türkan Saylan Cultural Center. Additional protests are possible in other urban centers across Turkey.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected near all demonstration sites.

Context

Hrant Dink was the editor in chief of the Turkish-Armenian newspaper Agos. He was shot three times by a Turkish nationalist on January 19, 2007.
