Malaysia: Mahathir Mohamed remains interim premier after resigning February 24

Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed appointed interim premier on February 24, following his unexpected resignation; political rallies are possible



Sultan Muhammad V appointed Mahathir Mohamed as interim premier on Monday, Februayr 24, following the unexpected announcement earlier in the day of his resignation from his position as prime minister. Mahathir is expected to hold the position until a new prime minster and cabinet are chosen. However, representatives of several parties in his coalition and some opposition figures have called for Mahathir to stay in office. His resignation follows talks between Mahathir's coalition and opposition figures on forming a new government.
