At least 44 people have been killed and over 13,800 others have been evacuated due to heavy rains in Minas Gerais state as of Sunday, January 26. Local authorities have issued a state of emergency in 99 cities across the state due to the weather conditions, its effect on infrastructure damage, and the resulting displacement. Rain fall recorded in Belo Horizonte has broken records, at 172 mm (7 in) in 24 hours.

Rain is expected to continue over the next several days in Belo Horizonte and other areas. Further flooding and damage are therefore possible.

Disruptions to transportation and business are likely to continue in the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. It is important to note that that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
