Carnival celebrations in Rio de Janeiro February 21-29; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected

Rio de Janeiro will hold carnival celebrations from Friday, February 21, through Saturday, February 29. Many of the main events will be held in or around the Sambódromo, Ipanema, and Copacabana areas of the city. Parades will take place at approximately 21:30 (local time) each night in the Sambodromo from February 21 to February 24, with the championship parade set to take place at 21:30 on February 29. An estimated 6 million people, including 1.5 million foreign tourists, are expected to participate in the celebrations.

Significant transportation disruptions (e.g. road closures, traffic congestion) and a heightened security presence are to be expected across Rio de Janeiro during the celebrations.

Individuals in Rio de Janeiro are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence and significant transportation disruptions, report any suspicious behavior to relevant authorities, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
