India: Heightened security in Uttar Pradesh amid nationwide strike January 8 /update 1

Heightened security in Uttar Pradesh as trade unions strike nationwide January 8; markets are not participating in strike

Warning

Event

Security has been increased in Uttar Pradesh amid the nationwide trade union strike on Wednesday, January 8. Security personnel have reportedly been asked to remain vigilant, especially in areas that experienced violence during anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in December.

At least 60 student unions, ten trade unions, and 175 agricultural unions announced they would participate in the strike to protest the government's failure to address their demands regarding unemployment, minimum wages, and social security, as well as perceived anti-labor policies. Markets nationwide remain open during the strike, and commercial activity will reportedly continue.

Significant business disruptions are expected nationwide. Public demonstrations and associated transportation disruptions are possible in urban centers amid a heightened security presence.

Advice

Individuals in India are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any large demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate business and transportation disruptions.
