Angola: Youth activists plan to protest in Uige, Jan. 9

Anti-government protest planned in Uige, Angola, Jan. 9.

Warning

Event

Youth activists plan to protest in Uige Jan. 9. The demonstration is being held to denounce socioeconomic grievances in the country, poor access to basic health and education facilities, and the country's increasing unemployment rates. The activists are also demanding an alternative in power due to the rising number of electricity outages. The exact starting time and location of the protest is unclear.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protests and manage traffic. While organizers have called for participants to remain peaceful in protest, there is a possibility of clashes with security forces, particularly if orders to disperse are ignored or if participants are overly disruptive. Police forcibly dispersed a related anti-governmental protest organized by the same group in Cabinda Nov. 28 and arrested nine protesters. Localized road travel disruptions near the protest site are likely.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to possible clashes between protesters and police. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the affected areas Jan. 9. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately, and take shelter in a secure, non-governmental building.
