Gabon: Teachers union calls for a nationwide strike Jan 11-13

Teachers union calls for a nationwide strike in Gabon Jan 11-13. Protests possible in cities, including Libreville and Port-Gentil.

Warning

Event

Unionized teachers will hold a nationwide general strike in Gabon Jan. 11-13. The Convention Nationale des Syndicats du Secteur Education (Conasysed) called the action to protest various labor-related issues.

Demonstrations associated with the upcoming strike are possible outside educational facilities, such as the Ministry of National Education in the Montagne Sainte district of Libreville, and government buildings in cities and towns across the country, particularly in the capital, Libreville, and Port-Gentil.

Authorities will likely increase security at potential demonstration locations as a precaution or if protests manifest. Clashes between protesters and police are possible if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore orders to disperse. Mass arrests may occur if authorities deem the action to violate coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions. Traffic disruptions are likely near demonstrations.

Advice

Avoid all protests. If crowds form, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location. Allow additional time for travel and seek routes that avoid potential protest locations.
