Slovenia: Police Union of Slovenia to launch an indefinite nationwide strike starting Jan. 11

Police Union of Slovenia to launch an indefinite nationwide strike in Slovenia from Jan. 11. Transport disruptions and protests possible.

Warning

Event

The Police Union of Slovenia (Policijskega Sindikata Slovenije, PSS) announced plans for an indefinite nationwide strike that will begin 0700 on Jan. 11. The striking police officers demand that the Ministry of Interior increase their salaries and improve working conditions. Some 5,000 police officers are expected to participate in the labor action. Union leaders have confirmed that officers affiliated with PSS will be scaling back their work as part of the labor action but will still perform essential functions and enforce coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions. Another police union, the Slovenian Police Union (Sindikat Policistov Slovenije, SPS) has announced that it will not join the PSS' strike.

The strike could prompt business, travel, and transport disruptions due to shortages of personnel. While the PSS has not announced plans for demonstrations, spontaneous protests or picketing associated with the labor action cannot be ruled. Should any demonstrations materialize, they may manifest outside the Ministry of Interior or other government buildings.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the likelihood of additional violence. Exercise caution near likely demonstration sites. Leave immediately and take refuge in a secure, non-government building if violence erupts. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Confirm business appointments.
