Warning

Event

An explosion has occurred at a liquor store along Street 62 in the Karada district of Baghdad early Jan. 11. There have been no immediate reports of casualties. Emergency personnel have arrived at the scene and are investigating the incident.

Authorities will likely maintain increased security in the area as investigations continue. Localized transport disruptions are likely in the Karada district through the afternoon of Jan. 11.

Context

Karada District is one of Baghdad's most religiously diverse areas, with its majority-Shi'a population and sizeable Christian community. The district has witnessed several militant attacks over the past few years. In July 2016, the Islamic State (IS) detonated a truck bomb in Karada, killing more than 300 people and injuring hundreds more. While IS has not claimed responsibility for the recent explosion, the group's involvement cannot be ruled out. IS fighters in and around Baghdad are still relatively well equipped, highly mobile, and almost certainly retain the support of local, marginalized Sunni communities north and west of the capital.

Advice

Avoid the area until the situation stabilizes and authorities give the all-clear. Keep a safe distance from large concentrations of security personnel. Plan accordingly for road travel disruptions. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Heed the instructions of security officials.
