Tunisia: Additional protests, fuel supply shortages likely in Skhira in Sfax Governorate through at least mid-January

Additional protests, fuel supply shortages likely in Shkira, Tunisia, through mid-January following closure of industrial zone Jan 11.

Warning

Event

Additional demonstrations in response to growing unemployment in Skhira in Sfax Governorate are likely through at least mid-January. Protesters closed the industrial zone in the city on Jan. 11, prompting disruptions to fuel distribution in Sfax Governorate; the facility also supplies several southern regions of the country with fuel.

Long queues at filling stations and various fuel-related closures have been reported in the governorate. Persistent fuel scarcity could lead to public transport disruptions in large cities. Minor security disturbances are possible around functioning fuel stations, and protests could occur if retailers hoard fuel or engage in perceived price-gouging. Power outages cannot be ruled out.

Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor any demonstrations that may materialize. Heightened security measures, as well as localized transport and business disruptions, are likely near protest sites. Clashes between police and protesters are possible.

Advice

Avoid all announced or proposed protest actions due to the potential for violence. Exercise caution near likely protest locations. Monitor local media for protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Confirm the availability of transport and allow additional time to reach destinations.

Plan accordingly for supply chain disruptions and freight delivery delays. Only purchase fuel from legitimate retailers. Ensure adequate fuel reserves are available if long-distance driving is necessary.
