Warning

Event

The Algerian Ministry of Defense has launched a security operation in the Bir El Ater region of Tebessa Province near the Tunisian border following the explosion of a landmine. The explosion, which was reportedly placed by militant groups active in the area, killed four civilians. Bir El Alter is located in eastern Algeria, about 497 km (309 miles) southeast of Algiers.

Security forces will likely remain deployed in the region and could establish security checkpoints. Clashes between the Algerian People's National Army (ANP) and militant groups remain likely. Heightened security measures in the region will prompt localized transport and business disruptions.

Context

Several terror groups, including Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Jund al-Khalifa, the Caliphate Soldiers, and Katibat Sahara, operate in Algeria. These militant groups regularly attack security forces, civilians, and foreigners. Security forces neutralize most attacks before they materialize.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in areas of eastern Algeria where additional similar incidents could occur. Keep away from likely deployment locations, such as open fields and unpaved roads. Heed the instructions of local security personnel. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
