Pakistan: JI to hold protests in multiple areas of Karachi Jan. 15-17

Jamaat-e-Islami to protest in multiple areas of Karachi, Pakistan, Jan. 15-17. Increased security likely; transport disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party plans multiple protests in Karachi Jan. 15-17. Organizers claim the ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) is failing to provide jobs and are demanding a new census be conducted; organizers claim the PPP deliberately understated the previous census to deny rights for residents. The JI has announced the following protests:

  • Jan. 15: Protesters will gather in the Nursery area from 1700. Activists may demonstrate on Sharah-e-Faisal highway.

  • Jan. 16: Demonstrators plan to march from Five Star Chowrangi to the Hyderi Market. Authorities have not announced a starting time.

  • Jan. 17: Activists intend to protest at Aladin Park. Authorities have not announced a starting time.

Protests will likely involve dozens to a few hundred people, although participation will likely be affected by ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) gathering restrictions. The JI plans further protests in late January.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may enforce COVID-19 gathering restrictions. Clashes between security forces and protesters are possible, especially if police forcibly attempt to disperse demonstrators. Protesters may block or march along roadways, causing localized transport disruptions. Business service disruptions are also possible, especially if clashes break out.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Heed all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near demonstrations. Confirm business appointments in advance.
