Additional security personnel have deployed to the vicinity of the neighborhoods of Bab Al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, in Tripoli, following clashes there earlier Jan. 16. Although information is limited, the violence took place between rival groups of youths from each neighborhood and was likely rooted in sectarian tensions. Precedent suggests the deployment is likely to focus on Syria Street, which divides the two neighborhoods.

Security forces will likely maintain tight security measures in the impacted area in the coming days as a precaution. Roadblocks and additional security checkpoints are possible. Localized transport disruptions may occur. Additional violence between rival groups of youths, as well as between these groups and security personnel, is possible.

Context

Sectarian tensions and associated clashes remain an ongoing concern in the Bab Al-Tabbaneh and adjacent Jabal Mohsen neighborhoods of Tripoli; the former is largely Sunni Muslim and the latter Alawite.

Allow additional travel time near in the vicinity of Bab Al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Heed all instructions from security personnel.
