Event

A magnitude-5.2 offshore earthquake occurred off Penama Province, at about 1438 VUT Jan. 17. The epicenter was around 103 km (64 miles) east of Luganville, Espiritu Santo Island, Sanma Province. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles). Light shaking was probably felt in Penama and Sanma provinces, while weak shaking may have occurred in Malampa and Torba provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties due to the earthquake; however, it could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Authorities have not issued any tsunami warnings.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly in coastal areas near the earthquake's epicenter.
