India: Activists call for shutdown strike in Tripura State Jan. 18

Indian National Congress activists to hold 12-hour shutdown strike across Tripura State, India, Jan. 18. Protests, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The Tripura branch of the Indian National Congress (INC) plans to hold a 12-hour shutdown strike across Tripura State Jan. 18. While organizers have not announced the starting time for the strike, media sources claim the strike will begin at dawn and end at dusk. Participants intend to denounce an attack on the Tripura INC President Pijush Kanti Biswas in Sipahijala District early Jan. 17. The INC claims that rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters were responsible. Some shops and markets will probably close, and various public transport services, including buses, taxis, and trains, may be disrupted.

INC supporters will also likely hold demonstrations, with the largest gatherings likely in urban centers, especially the state capital, Agartala. Demonstrators will probably gather at government buildings and public squares. Protests may also block or march along roadways. Dozens to a couple hundred people will likely gather for larger rallies.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may enforce coronavirus disease (COVID-19) gathering restrictions at larger rallies. Clashes between security forces and protesters are possible, especially if police forcibly disperse demonstrators. Localized transport disruptions are possible if protesters block roadways.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, non-governmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor local news sources for updates on protests and road conditions, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Allow additional travel time near rallies. Confirm business appointments in advance.
